Journey Down Memory Lane

I was travelling on and on
One fine summer morning
Driving myselves all alone
To my old school, far away.

As I drove myself away
My heart beating very fast
Half with joy of going back
And half with terrible pain.

I longed to meet my dear old friends
Whom I thought were lost forever ago
I recall quite accurately
Those days we spent in fullest joy.

I reached my dear old school building
In early evening, under the unclear sky
The sun rays were blocked time to time
By the dark rain-clouds up in the sky.

As I opened the school gate,
It creaked loudly in the silence
I entered my old school compound
Into the eerie silence.

I couldn’t find anyone  there
In and around my school
My footsteps echoed loudly
In the empty corridors.

My alma mater looked different
From what I knew of it
Now, with webbed windows and creaking doors
And broken window panes.

The muddy ground was covered in
Dry leaves and never cleaned
And weeds have grown so high up
Covering the garden fence.

I saw the cracks on the dull-looking walls
The paints were falling down
The benches, desks, and tables, chairs
Have all been broken down.

Dust rose with each of my footsteps
There was no one anywhere
All I could see were termites and snakes
And rats all over the place.

I walked alone in the vast grounds
Right under the giant tree,
Which stood still, with its head held high
Up against the sky.

But with no leaves nor the chirping birds
The giant tree looked lonely
The silence pressing down my ears
Seemed to sound of death.

I grew frightened of the old place
Which was once like heaven
I ran away through the open gate
Never to come back again…
